Nord Ecuador

Ein klein wenig traurig, dass wir nicht mehr Zeit in Ecuador verbracht haben, fahren wir auch schon Richtung Kolumbien. Aber zunaechst wollen wir noch den beruehmten Markt von Otavalo besuchen.
Doch noch liegt auch das Aequator Museum noerdlich von Quito vor uns: Breitengrad 00 00.00 zeigt unser GPS. Eine interessante und witzige Tour erwartet uns im Museum.

In Otavalo haben wir einen GPS Wegpunkt fuer einen netten Campingplatz bekommen: Rincon del Viajero, nicht zu verwechseln mit dem gleichnamigen Hostal im Zentrum. Der Besitzer Dennis freut sich ueber Overlander und so heisst er uns herzlich willkommen. Auf dem Camping treffen wir Edita und Alan, ein Amerikanisch, Australisch, Polnisches Paar mit ihrem vier Monate alten Sohn Ari (das bedeutet Loewe) und ihrer Mexikanischen Katze Pancho. Sie wollen nach Patagonien auswandern, wir haben eine grossartige Zeit, rauchen viel und reden ueber den Sueden Argentiniens, wo sie noch nie zuvor waren. Nach ein paar Tagen hat sogar Pancho, der an ausgpraegtes Interesse an giftigen Froeschen, die ihn high machen, zeigt, keine Angst mehr vor uns. Ari grinst auch die ganze Zeit.
Auf dem Markt geben wir viel zu viel Geld aus: wir kaufen einen Schrumpfkopf, ein paar andere Souvenirs und ganz wichtig eine riesige Haengematte fuer zwei. Die Indios auf dem Markt sind wunderbar bekleidet in ihrere traditionellen Art und ausserdem noch super nett. Wir reden mehr als wir handeln. Alles in allem verbringen wir viel zu viel Zeit in Otavalo, aber schaffen es dennoch loszukommen.


A littlebit sad that we haven´t spend more time in Ecuador we are heading towards Columbia, but we want to see the famous market of Otavalo on the way.

Before that we visit the Equator museum near Quito: Lat 00 00.00!! Interesting tour and funny experiments there.

For Otavalo we have a waypoint for a nice camping: Rincon del Viajero. The owner Dennis from the U.S. also runs the according hostal downtown. He is quite happy to host overlanders and so we are very welcome. On the camping we meet Edita and Alan an US/Polish/Australien couple and their 4 month old son Ari (which means lion) and their Mexican cat Pancho. They are on their way to Patagonia where there want to build up their new existence. We have a great time, smoking a lot and talking about the South of Argentina where they have never been before. After some days even Pancho, who is quite interested in playing with poisoneous frogs making him high, isn´t afraid of us any more. Ari is also smiling all the time.
On the market we spend far to much money, buying a shrinked head, some souvenirs and most important a huge hammock for us two. The indigenian people on the market are dressed marvelously and are so so friendly. So we spend to much time in Otavalo, but finally make it to leave.

Galapagos

Unser erster Flug seit wir im November nach Suedamerika gekommen sind, bringt uns auf die Galapagos Inseln. Bereits am Flughafen spueren wir was es bedeutet Darwins Spielplatz zu betreten: Schuhe werden desinfiziert, Gepaeck nach Nahrung, Tieren, Erde und Pflanzen durchsucht und uns 100USD pP Nationalparkgebuehr abgeknoepft. Alles um diese einzigartige kleine Welt zu schuetzen. Auch ein Gespuer bekommen wir fuer den dicht gepackten Terminplan der Kreuzfahrt: ein kurzes Hallo und schon fahren wir auf der Angelito in Richtung unserer ersten Inselchen.
Galapagos ist tatsaechlich sehr einmalig, da die Wildtiere keinerlei Scheu vor Menschen zeigen - unglaublich.
Die naechsten Tage verbringen wir mit Nachtfahrten (inkl. Seekrankheit), ununterbrochenem Essen, kiloweise Fotos machen und vor allem damit, die Fauna, die Galapagos beruehmt gemacht hat, zu bestaunen. Der Ausflug ist jeden Cent wert.
Ein weiteres Highlight ist das Schnorcheln, die Galapagos sind unter Wasser nicht weniger spektakulaer als ueber. Wir sind sehr froh eine wasserdichte Knipse dabei zu haben.
Die Zeit vergeht leider viel zu schnell und die Kreuzfahrt neigt sich dem Ende. Wir sind total ueberladen mit Impressionen, auch wegen des effizienten Zeitplans der Tour, so dass wir erst noch ein paar Tage in Quito brauchen um Fotos zu sortieren und ein wenig runterzukommen. Danach geht es Richtung Kolumbien.

Our first flight since we got to South America last November brings us to the main island Baltra of the Galapagos. On the airport we are already feeling what it means to enter Darwins playground: shoes got desinfected, lugage checked for food, animals, earth and plants and we need to pay 100USD pP national park fee. All for the protection of that unique world. And we get a first taste of the thight timetable of the cruise, a short welcome and we find ourselves on the Angelito leaving towards the first islands.
Galapagos are definitly very unique since the animals arent any afraid of people. What an experience! The next days we do nigh cruises to switch from island to island (including sea sickness), eating all the time, doing tons of photos and most important: watching the endemic wildlife the islands are famous for. Worth every single penny - have a look at the photos, they say more than words.
Another highlight is the snorkeling, under sealevel the islands are not less spectacular than above. We are really happy to have that waterproof cam with us. Time is running far to fast and our cruise turns to an end. We are simply overloaded with impressions, since the busy schedule of the cruise, so that we need some more days in Quito to sort the pics and calm down a bit before we are heading towards Colombia.

Sued Ecuador

Die Einreise verlaeuft voellig problemlos, nur der Beamte auf der Ecuadorianischen Seite ist ein wenig wortkarg, ganz im Gegensatz zu den Jungs vom Zoll. Die labern uns das Ohr weg, sogar einen kleinen Deutschkurs geben wir zum Besten. So verbringen wir deutlich mehr Zeit als eigentlich noetig an der Grenze.
Wie wir schon von anderen Overlandern hoerten, sind die Strassen in Ecuador ganz in Ordnung, aber sehr kurvig.
Ausserdem kann der Strassengraben sehr tief und matschig werden, wenn man nicht aufpasst. So schaffen wir es doch tatsächlich uns bei einem Pipistop im Matsch zu vergraben. Unser Auto kippt bei der Aktion fast um und ohne fremde Hilfe waeren wir da wohl nur mit viel Schaufeln wieder herausgekommen. Ein Auto zieht und fuenf Bauern schieben vorne.
Da Ecuador zwar klein aber auch ziemlich bevoelkert ist, tun wir uns sehr schwer Plaetze zum Wildcampen zu finden. Am Ende landen wir auf dem Dreschplatz der Bauern neben der Strasse. Auf dem Weg nach Quito haben wir leider Wetterpech: alle Vulkane stecken in der dichten Wolkendecke, trotzdem begeben wir uns auf eine Lonely Planet empfohlene Runde durchs bergige Hinterland. Saubloede Idee, wissen wir doch genau, dass LP nur dazu taugt, festzustellen, welche Plaetze man besser meiden sollte. Vermutlich ein Kumpel des Autors dort hinten ein Hostel. Wir sind entaeuscht. So fahren wie zuegig nach Quito, wo wir freudig das Angebot unseres Reiseveranstalters Cometa Travel annehmen, kostenlos auf deren Parkplatz zu naechtigen bis wir den Galapagos Trip mit deren Boot Angelito unternehmen - grossartig!

We enter the country quite smooth, no hassle at the borders, only the immigration officer on the Ecuadorian side is a bit crumpy, but the Aduana guys help him out. They are keen on chating on so we spend much more time than we would have needed at the border. As other overlander promised the roads are quite ok, but winding at its best. As we stop for a pee we manage to get stucked in the mud next to the road so bad, that we can not make out on our own the first time on the trip. Some very very friendly farmers helped us out pushing and pulling the car.
Since Ecuador is small but populated country we have a hard time to find a place to bushcamp in the mountaineous area. Finally we end up on place where the local farmers proceed their weed next to the main road. On the way to Quito we have bad luck all the volcanos are hidden in the clouds, despite we do a little roundtrip through the mountains south of Quito. The tour is recommended in the Lonely Planet Shoestring and absolutly not worth it. We are disappointed. Guess the author has a friend running a hostel on the route there. So we hurry to the capital where the tour operator Cometa Travel offered us to stay for free on their hostal parking till we do the Galapagos Cruise with their boat Angelito, really nice. We chill out some days there and find a used waterproof cam for the cruise - great.
